    67 327/350 HP Redline

Is it possible for a 67 conv with a 327/350 hp engine and 4 speed to have an original tach with a redline of 5500 as opposed to 6000. Anyone recall running across this before ??

    thanks

    John,

All L-79 optioned cars should have been delivered from the factory with a 6000 rpm redline.

Manufacturing errors did & do happen

      John

My 64 was delivered with two left side sun visors and no arm rests. The right side visor is mounted up side down and has become bent because of the bad fit.
The door panels had no holes for the arm rest screws and I'm positive they are original. I have since installed arm rests. I'm sure Bubba was working on the line when this car was built. So based on what I know are manufacturing errors on my 64, I can easily understand the installation of the wrong tachometer. The challenge would be to convince a judge or buyer of the error.

      Good Luck.

The problem is that the Instruments were shipped as an assembly including the tach, and each had it's own part number to be checked against the manifest. Anything can happen, but it is essentially a 300hp instrument cluster in a 350hp car. What are the dates in the cluster, and how do they relate to the car build? Also if the part number sticker is still on the cluster, what is the part number for the cluster?

          John,

It's highly unlikely that your car was delivered that way although it is remotely possible. What is much more probable is the fact that your tachometer was replaced years ago. Of the three units that were once available, the mid range (6000) redline unit was the first to be discontinued and that happened in the very early 70's as I remember. The other two units remained available for almost another two decades so anyone replacing one would have gotten either the low or high redline instead of the correct mid range 6000 redline unit.

I agree that the tach was most likely changed at some time after it was delivered. But on the other hand, my step father worked in the Tarrytown NY plant for years and told of many errors made on the line. The line moved at 60 units per hour. Most errors were caught but some made it by the inspector. The only thing known for sure is the red line should be 6000.
