    Points to Electronic Ignition

It was recommended to me by a friend to switch my ignition on my '65 327/350hp over to an electronic ignition in place of the current points system. Does anybody have any experience on this matter and do you recommend this swap? Are points really that much of a pain to warrant the change? I would like to keep the underhood area looking stock so I'm reluctant to change to an HEI or going with any of the larger aftermarket ignition systems such as MSD. Any suggestions as to whether I should just stay with the points or convert to electronic would be appreciated.

    Bill,
I just had Dave Fielder rebuild my 1967 327/300hp distributor and he suggested the Breakerless system( Ti Specialy). I had a Pertronix on my old Rustang and it did go out once, you're stranded! I hope the Breakerless is better, but my old car started faster, ran better, felt stronger, and started when hot. Old Blue Ovals hate starting when they're hot. Good Luck!

Nothing wrong with a "Good" points distributor. Pretty easy to carry an extra set and replace along the road. A lot cheaper too! Like anything else, if it is maintained properly it should last a long time. Just my old two cents!

Don't confuse a 'electronic points replacement system' with 'HEI'. Very different animals. Points only need looking at (at most) once a year and do not leave you stranded at the side of the road like some/most electronic points replacement systems.

The supposed performance increases that some claim to achieve are hogwash in my experience.

          Bill,

There is a one wire system advertised in the driveline for $160. If I converted mine today I would go with that one. I did mine about 6 years ago and used a Pertronix unit that uses two wires. What I like about the conversion is the timing is always where you set it, plugs seem to last longer, and less maintenance.

I have used both Pertronix and Breakerless SE. Both worked flawlessly. I much prefer the Breakerless SE as it uses only the stock distributor wire. The Pertronix unit has an extra red wire from the distributor to the ballast resistor. The Breakerless unit was an easier install as well. Rock solid timing, no dwell adjustment required, plugs last longer, and looks dead stock unless you pull the cap. The Breakerless SE is available from Lectric Limited.

I tried the Mallory Unilight electronic ignition in my 70 about 1974. The unit failed about 1976. I removed the Mallory Unilight and reinstalled the points. Have not tried the newer electronic conversion units available now on either my 68 or 70. I like the points system for the amount of driving I do with the 68 327/350 and do not have any plans to change. Installed a ZZ1 GM crate engine in my 70 back in the early 90's and the crate engine came with a HEI distributor. It has not failed. The HEI in my 85 Corvette is original and has not failed. The one wire electronic conversion ignitions are available. Once installed, removal is only necessasry if it fails.

I have used a Pertronix in my 65' 327 / 365 for 4 years now. Absolutly no problem, no hassle, no points !! Starts quick and runs good in hot weather.

If you stick with the points, get a good quality set of points. The el-cheapos from a lot of parts stores have a weaker than original spring tension. They sometimes bounce at high RPMs.

So who's points do you buy? Aren't all delco points made in Mexico?
