    62 Transmission/Clutch Noise

Over the winter replaced cluth and throw out bearing, had a rattling noise when you held the clutch in, though not all the time. Had transmission looked at by a local shop, no noticable play or wear. After about three hundred miles the noise has returned, not as bad, but still annoying. Does it most of the time when car is cold, occasionally when warmed up. Is this a front trans bearing problem? If so any suggestions inthe Ohio area for reputable rebuild?
    Thanks

    Re: 62 Transmission/Clutch Noise

    Terry,

It doesn't seem reasonable that the change in the clutch plate and throwout bearing would stop the transmission from making a noise temporarly. I would look to the adjustment of the clutch pedal/throwout bearing. It is outlined in the Corvette Servicing Guide ST-12 on pages 6R-3 and 6R-4. The throwout bearing cannot ride on the pressure plate as it will turn all the time and the heat will destroy it very quickly.

Sounds like your throwout bearing has already destroyed itself again however it may be something else and deserves attention.

    Hope this helps,

    Regards,

    JR

Noise described is typical of throwout bearing not properly seated in the clutch fork.

You just heard from two of the best.

Get a mirror with an extension and a flashlight, remove the clutch arm rubber and see what's there.....

It should look like this - both the fork and the anti-rattle leaf spring should be inside the groove in the bearing; the design allows it to be assembled wrong, which can result in premature failure due to inability to achieve correct pedal free play.

Thanks guys, I'll be crawling under it tonight with mirror and flashlight in hand. Thought I installed it properly, but one never is sure, stranger things have happened.

                we lost a big race

because the guys that installed the new engine did this incorrectly and half way thru the race that we were leading the clutch went out.
