After finding 3 broken valve springs in my recently completed engine rebuild after about 500 miles, (Crane cam kit used), I spoke to the rebuilder who told me he was having problems with Cranes products and to go ahead and change out all of the valve springs. He suggested I purchase stock springs from my local auto parts retailer. The retailer ordered me the Federal Mogual springs part no. VS521 for a 283/230 hp 1960 . I hired a mechanic to come to my home to change the springs on Saturday, and when we compaired the height of the new springs to the old ones, we found the new Sealed Power springs were about 1/4" longer than the old ones. The mechanic said to go ahead and replace them anyway he didin't think they would do any harm. While replacing the springs we found one of the tops of a valve had been pounded into the shape of a mushroom, So I removed both heads and sent them back to the rebuilder. When he saw the springs he advised me that they were wrong and he ordered a new set. I called Federal Mogual and after several conversations, they told me there was a manufacturing defect in thier springs and to send them back. They went so far as to tell me to instruct the rebuilder not to reorder a new set of VS521's as they didn't know how far reaching into thier inventory the defective parts were. THey also said it was my fault for installing the springs without checking them out further! Hmmmmmmm. SO be careful if you are buying valve springs, There is a problem with Federal Moguals Vs 521. Check the height carefully!!
