It's 1:00 AM Friday morning and all is quiet here on the west coast of Florida. It's 79 degrees and there's a slight breeze off the bay. By 4:00 PM today, we will probably have hurricane winds of up to 120+ MPH and a storm surge of water that is estimated to reach 14 feet above normal. My house is 11 feet above sea level but probably won't be tomorrow because I live almost right on the water. Aaaahhhh, sunny Florida!

Re: Hurricane Charley
First I find out that the AC on my vette is going to cost me $3500 canadian to repair and now Charlie is heading for our Fort Myers Beach Condo. Not a good day.Fortunately I (and my 82 vette) are in Canada due to being a snow bird. I do have another 2 vettes in a garage just a mile or so from Fort Myers and am keeping my fingers crossed. Unfortunately, last year the directors of our Condo in their wisdom forced us to remove our hurricane shutters.- Top

Hurricane Charley is now a CAT #4
Dangerous storm. Corvetts and boats can be replaced, people cannot. Be safe and good luck to all in Florida.- Top

Re: Hurricane Charley is now a CAT #4
watching CNN. They are filming from the condo next to ours on Ft. Myers beach. They panned and we saw our condo on TV. Our vettes are in a garage just across the back bay from our condo. The expected storm surge is maybe 18ft. Fort Myers and Sannibel beaches are 4 feet high. High tide is at 2.30 today as well.Fingers crossed.- Top

Re: Hurricane Charley
Tom,
We were really lucky here in the Tampa/St Petersburg area because at the very last minute, the hurricane turned right and went inland instead of continuing north. I was able to move all but the 66 car to higher ground and I thought for sure it would be trash when the storm passed. I was lucky but I'm sure there were many others that weren't as it moved across the state towards Orlando.

I live in Cape Coral and I was lucky as well. We were without power for 7 days and had some tree damage but other than that it wasn't to bad. Punta Gorda is about 15 miles north of where I live and you would not believe the damage.I don't think I want ride another one out right away though. We had gusts here up to 135 mph. But Fawcett hospital in Pt. Charlotte recorded bands on the eye wall at 173mph according to Wayne Salade the emergency management chief for Charlotte county. And 165 somwhere in Punta Gorda.By the way my 69 vert made ok also.

Re: Hurricane Charley is now a CAT #4
Tom--
Thanks for the offer. I am glad that you and you and your cars made it through Charlie ok. Our Manager has advised that our building made it through ok except that we did lose all of our car ports. I also heard from my next door neighbor just now that he did get water in his condo and now needs new rugs. The water came in his windows although they did not break. My cars are actually are in my brothers 2 car garage in Estero. Estero did get some wind damage and I have not heard any thing about a storm surge. He is not too far from the back bay and is just about opposite our condo on the Beach. He is trying to get a neighbor to check but I do not know his situation with keys. Thanks again and will e mail you if we do need you to look.- Top

Re: Hurricane Charley
Tom,
Sure glad you made it through without serious damage. No one there was prepared for that and I'm surprised there weren't more serious injuries. Everyone (except me) here in the Tampa/St Pete area was prepared as we all thought it was coming straight for us. Many of the people that live here, left and were seeking shelter inland in the exact area that the hurricane DID hit.
I've been concerned about Paul D'Alessandro as his Corvette shop and home are in Port Charlotte. Hope he made it through ok.
Bob Jorjorian sent some pictures of his street in Orlando last night and I couldn't believe all the damage. I thought that by the time the hurricane went all the way across the state, it would have been weakened but they also had winds over 100 MPH. He was without power for six days. (no damage to the Corvettes)
I think we've all learned a valuable lesson on this. I know I have.

Re: Hurricane Charley
Micheal
I had the national weather service on the computer screen at about 10 after 2 Friday the 13th and they still said it was going to hit Tampa /St. Pete and at that time it was between Naples and Ft. Myers beach. The local weather man on WINK tv said i'm going to have to go against the National weather service at this time. He said it is going to hit between Ft. Myers and Punta Gorda and he hit it dead on.I don't have a lot of use for the National weather service at this time. With the resources that they have available to them compared to a small tv station I don't think that there is any excuse for this failure on there part.I'm really surprised that there wasn't a lot more loss of life we had basicly NO warning.
