    exh manifild automatic choke tube

I had my 61 running yesterday for the first time to break-in the cam and happened to look down at the tube that goes through the exhaust manifold - it was glowing red hot. Is this normal?

    John...

The tube gets hot enough to burn your arm, but not glowing red hot. Check your water pump and make sure it's up to par. During break in, advanced timing will create more heat, (specially on a high lift cam engine) until you tune it in.

John, I am not sure of the construction of the tube on your particular car, but if it is the type where the tube runs through the exhaust manifold and the tube section inside the manifold is perhaps broken or rusted through, I understand you would be sucking pure exhaust gases into the tube and up to the carb. That could probably lead to big time flames under the hood!

      Best regards,
      Charlie

I may have mis-stated the situation. Here's a little more information. I don't have the tube from the manifold connected to the automatic choke on the carb - I don't have anything connected to the tube in the manifold. I looked down through the tube and down inside the manifold I could see the red hot tube. As the tube got closer to the exterior surface of the manifold, it no longer glowed. This was the first time I started the new rebuild and it seemed to run smoothly with no black smoke coming out the tail-pipe. I will do some fine tuning but it seems to be pretty close mixture wise. The only thing I noticed (and I haven't checked the vacuum level yet) is that the RPMs do not change at idle when I pull the vacuum off the distributor. I installed the L79 cam in this 283CI and surprising to me, it runs very smoothly. A couple other things; I don't have the heat riser on the right side, I installed a spacer instead and I also have the crossover pipe between the left and right exhaust pipes; I do have the holes plugged between the intake manifold and heads; The intake is GM casting #3823481 - it is a replica of the stock iron manifild except for the material.

John, regarding the tube as viewed inside the manifold, what you see is normal. The tube is heated by the exhaust gas that in turn heats the air pulled through the tube for the choke. Sounds as if you project is going well. Good luck as it continues.
