    1962 Clutch Disk

Attempted to install the engine in my 62 today. Transmission will not pull up to the bellhousing. After taking it apart and measuring everything it seems that the splines on the transmission are bottoming out in the clutch disk. Disk can only install one way but the hub of the disk appears to be too thick.
Disk came as part of a "kit" from Paragon. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks John

There may be a problem with the disc. However, the GM disc, last available under GM #3889346, is long-since discontinued. So, you'll have to use an aftermarket piece. Likely, the Paragon unit is manufactured by LUK/Sachs. Their clutch parts usually work perfectly.

One other tip, though: what are you using for a clutch alignment tool? The "hard-to-pull-the-transmission-up-to-the-bellhousing" phenomenon is VERY common. Usually, it's caused by a "slightly off" friction disc alignment. I've found that the ONLY alignment tool that will work effectively EVERY TIME is an old transmission input shaft of the correct size and spline configuration. With EVERY other sort of alignment tool, including the "plastic copies of the input shafts", it's VERY problematic.

Joe is right, never had any luck with the after market align tools. Also it is easy for e to put the tranny on the motor then install as a unit. Sometimes even with the right tool it can be a bear to get engine to line up with trans.
If you need a spline, let me know.

It may also be the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Could be the wrong size. I believe there are two sizes. Maybe someone else can chime in on that subject.

          Re: 1962 Clutch Disk Solution

The problem was the clutch disk. Although the catalog says "Made in the U.S. by the O.E.M. supplier" the disk we received was in fact made in Korea. I went to my local speed shop, purchased a Centerforce disk and it went together with no further problem.

Thanks for your suggestions. Since all this was done in 104 degree temperature it was not fun. Hopefully this posting will help others.
