Oil fill and master Cylinder caps 66' 427/390

Still waiting on my facts book. Until then, can someone give me a jump on exactly what color/type of cap was used on both the oil fill and master cylinder? The car is a 427/390 with standard brakes (single res. master cylinder). I'm receiving conflicting reports. Is the oil filler cap supposed to be chrome or black? I believe I've read that is should be black on the 66' 427 with an "S" stamped in the middle. Also, the master cylinder cap may have been black also. Any help is appreciated.

The valve cover oil fill cap should be a simi-gloss black with an "S" in the middle.If you have stnd. brakes does your cap screw on? If so the only color pictures I see are of a 425hp motor and the cap is a simi-gloss black color.

I stand to be corrected but hope this helps as I'm using the FACT BOOK of 63-67 Stingrays for refs. Maybe an owner of a 66 390 hp car will drop you actual info.

George, The cap is not a screw-on. It's the clip type (2). Thank you. If there is another 66' 427/390 standard brake owner out there, (there are plenty) maybe I'll get a response from him/her to confirm. Thanks again..

Jay and George, While essentially correct,George,I hope I can add something.Im unsure as to whether the oil filler caps were semi-gloss black or a sort of black iridite plating.I think the black plated caps are correct,but not 100% sure.The non-power master cylinders were painted semi gloss as a unit.I cant be sure but since the bottom side of the casings never seem to be painted(as though it was simply missed)I have thought for quite a while that the non-power master cylinders might have been attached to the firewall when it was painted.more of just a guess though.In any event,looking through Nolands book at non-power brake photos taken at the factory,it appears that the entire master cylinder was indeed painted!...........Bill S.

I have a 425 hp car so I wont comment on the oil filler cap. However the master cylinder cap can be either semi gloss black or gold cad plated per the judging manual.

John, 425 or 390 oil filler caps are the same.Replacement non-power master cylinder caps are gold-iridited,originals are painted black.Im honestly not sure what the judging manual says,I just know whats right.Please pay a little attention to the original factory shots in Nolands book.They tell the tale!........Bill S.

I have always placed a high level of credibility on Noland's books. I think they are hands down the most accurate. I was simply quoting from the judging manual. On page 97 of the 66 manual third edition for base equipment master cylinder it reads; "The fluid reservoir is covered with a round stamped metal lid which may be painted semi-gloss black or cadmium dichromate plated. The lid reads ..........."

Again I was only responding to a question on the NCRS technical discussion board that asked what color the master cylinder cover was. I guess I just assumed the person asking the question wanted to know what was acceptable from the NCRS perspective.
