parking brake rebuild carl rose a quick question my car's parking brake has unfortunately become inoperable specifically the lever when properly adjusted to approximately clicks makes no appreciable difference in holding the car i suspect the mechanism is frozen accordingly i have decided to rebuild the rear parking brake does anyone have any advice pertaining to the following this is a do the job correctly without cost concerns i plan to use the ss kits and shoes on the market and save the original pieces i was also planning to replace the front and rear cables should i use ss brake cables also would it be substantially less expensive to purchase these directly from ssbc is it ever necessary to turn the parking brake drums fortunately the rivets have already been drilled so i think the rotors will come off without difficulty anything else i should be anticipating ordering to do this job correctly any particular pitfalls thanks yallall carl

re parking brake rebuild gary schisler i rebuilt the parking brake system on my about four years ago using the stainless replacements this is not a difficult job the instructions were quite clear it is a dirty knuckle busting job because of the tight quarters you must work in i cannot comment on the idea of honing your emergency brake surfaces because i didn't do it it's not like they get used a lot so unless you have lots of rust i don't see the advantage of doing this as long as you are under there why not go ahead and replace the cables if there is any sign of binding or hanging up have fun doing it gary- Top

re parking brake rebuild joe lucia i don't understand the click part of your message unless the adjustment procedure for a ' is substantially different than that for up which uses the same parking brake system for up the procedure involves two basic steps first with the parking brake equalizer nuts fully loosened the shoes are adjusted at the wheel by turning the star wheel until the drum is tight then backing off the star wheel to clicks second the brake handle is engaged to the th click and the equalizer nuts adjusted until it requires lbs of pull to move the brake handle to the th click which is the fully engaged position stainless steel brake hardware and shoes work just fine although some of the early shoes weren't arched exactly right the ones now are arched exactly like oem i've compared them also the engagement lever which passes through the slot in the backing shield is made of powder metal type stainless and is a little thicker than oem nevertheless even though i live on the west coast where corrosion is not a problem i consider the stainless parts to be the only way to go i am not real crazy about the stainless rear parking brake cable though in appearance it is exactly like oem however i believe that it is slightly longer which means that when you adjust the cable at the equalizer you just about run out of adjustment by the time you get it adjusted properly prices are about the same for these parts regardless of where you get them about for shoes and hardware more for the cableIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

re parking brake rebuild ed jennings i had a similar situation with my and replaced the cable since it appeared to be frozen that turned out to be a waste of time effort and money as the brake mechanisims were frozen check them first if the cable is stiff but not crimped or broken put some penetrating oil in it and it will probably loosen up i like the ss parts but the old ones could have been cleaned up and reused successfully- Top

re parking brake rebuild carl rose thanks for all the help mr lucia the manual describes adjusting the brake by pulling hte handle up clicks then rotating the rear wheels until drag is felt i'm not sure if it is the same on the later models i think i will install ss brake shoes and hardware and replace the cables with the gm pieces thanks yall i just knew someone out there has done this job and would be able to offer sage advice carl- Top

re parking brake rebuild joe lucia it sounds like the parking brake adjustment procedure is different than later models the procedure that i spoke of earlier is the one specified in my manual i can't understand why gm would have changed the adjustment procedure though since the parking brake system is exactly the same on a as later models i would expect to be different since even though the parking brakes are the same the engagement mechanism under dash pull rod is different than console mounted lever it could be that gm found some deficiency in the procedure and modified it for later models i always suspect this when components systems remain unchanged but service procedures are modified remember gm rarely if ever amends service manuals for a given year except through dealer service bulletins which the public generally never seesIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

re parking brake rebuild carl rose hi mr lucia my service manual reads adjust the parking brake shoes until the disc will not move back off the adjuster notches apply the parking brake handle four notches tighten the brake cable at the equalizer to produce a light drag with eh wheel mounted have i misunderstood your instructions not sure if the later cars were similar the ssbc manual actually gives something similar to the above but not quite carl- Top

re parking brake rebuild mike ward carl i agree with all the advice given so far it is not necessary to turn your drums even if there is rust the brake is only applied when the car is stopped normally hopefully so an out of round condition won't matter nor would some rust even if you cleaned it off the next time water gets in the rust will reform an important part of the replacement procedure is bedding in the new shoes which consists of deliberatly applying the brake with the car in motion the friction will quickly wear away the high spots on the new shoes increasing the contact area with the drum i think most shop manuals contain the exact procedure well worth the effort regards mike ward- Top
