Hi I'm new here. My buddy has a 67 L88 hood he believes its orginal GM, only thing wrong is at the back where it should have 4 holes to pick up air someone cut it to one giant hole. Was this availiable from GM over the counter and what is the value of such an item. Thanks for any help. Brian Kotula

Re: 67 L88 hood
Hi Brian, welcome abord. As far as I know, there was never an "over the counter" L88 hood available and there was never a GM part number for a complete 67 L88 hood. Those in existance were either genuine factory modified big block hoods or those that were modified by customers. The plenum assembly that was to be bonded to the underside of the hood was available from GM for many years and I know a lot of original 427 hoods were converted to the L88 plenum.
Typically, the air inlet at the rear was two oval cutouts, one on each side with a divider in the center but I suppose almost anything goes on such a low production option. I think I have a good pic of the cut out area if you want to compare it to what you have.

67 L88 hood
Thanks Michael for the info. My buddy has this hood and a friend of his gave him a picture of an L88 hood, he's had this hood for a long time and never knew what it was until recently. Do you have any idea whats it value is? He's thinking of selling it. Thanks Brian Kotula- Top

Re: 67 L88 hood
Brian,
The problem with any 1967 L88 parts is generally, there are a LOT more parts than there are cars that can really use them. There are probably enough original 67 aluminum heads and 3418 carburetors out there to build 2500 more 67 L88's and the same is true for the hood plenum. That part was available well into the 80's and EVERYONE bought one thinking one day it would be worth a fortune. However, with only 20 possible customers plus a few phonies, there's a lot more parts than legit places to put them. Quite often we see "rare 67 only L88 aluminum heads" or "rare 67 only 3418 carburetor" for sale but seldom do these items sell for what the seller is asking. A LOT of SCCA race cars had these plenum units installed in the 60's and to this day there are a lot of them still out there.
On the other hand, if there was some way to document the fact that this particular hood actually did come from an original L88 car, it would be a different story. The problem is, I can think of no way to ever prove that one way or the other.
