I recently removed my distributor from my 1962 (250HP) to replace the vacumm advance. I am having trouble getting the distributor to seat in place. I tried wiggling the distributor around with much patience. I tried rotating the shaft one notch both directions with no luck either. Any suggustions would be appreciated. Note that this is not the first time I have removed the distributor. In the past if I had this problem, the wiggling and shaft rotation worked. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1962 250HP Distributor Installation Difficulty
Tim, I would suspect oil pump shaft alignment is the problem. Normally if you put the distributor back in the way it came out, this is not a problem, but guess something must have rotated it slightly. Look down dist hole with flashlight and determine if that may be the issue.- Top

Dennis is correct. The oil pump drive moved a little. Simply take a long wide plade screwdrive and put down the distributer hole and turn the shaft a little and try again. Two or three trys may be needed.- Top

Re: 1962 250HP Distributor Installation Difficulty
Thanks for the suggestions. I am still having problems seating the distributor after aligning the oil pump shaft. I noticed the oil pump shaft is able to be moved from side to side. Is that normal? It could be that the distributor is pushing the oil pump shaft to the side when inserted. Is this the likely cause?- Top

Some side to side movement is normal. When the distributor is installed the oil pump shaft sits inside the distributor gear which will eliminate the side to side play. Try rotating the distributor one tooth or more and see if it falls into place. The timing will not be correct but you will know that the distributor does seat ok. Then remove the distributor and try rotating the oil pump shaft and re installing the distributor until the rotor is lined up on number one. There is a plastic or nylon coupler that connects the oil pump drive shaft to the oil pump. I find this easy to brakes when removing the oil pump and in your case, if this is broken, then the oil pump and distributor shafts may not align properly. If it is broken, then you may need to drop the pan and oil pump to replace it. Maybe someone else has a method of replacing the coupler without dropping the pan. However, you will want to remove all the plastic parts and I do not see how this is done unless the pan and oil pump removed.
Good luck- Top
