Does anybody know who makes the best reproduction woodgrain console trim piece. I have purchased 3 different pieces and all of them are junk. Was the original piece made out of real wood, or was it a vinyl woodgrain covered piece of metal. Anybody know were to find an NOS real piece.

Jeff-----
The items which you seek are GM #3964123, without A/C, and GM #3964126, with A/C. These have been discontinued for many years and I don't think that you'll find too many around anymore. But, these are the part numbers you're looking for. You never know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Recreating Inserts
If you have a local cabinet shop that specializes in wooden kitchens you can probably get them to order some teak piano veneer, (teak is, I believe the closest match to whatever wood was originally used) You can use a reproduction piece as a cutting template and with an exacto knife cut a reasonable reproduction. Use linseed oil to darken to correct color AFTER installing using spray contact cement.. It's not as hard as it sounds and the results are worth the effort.

Re: Recreating Inserts
I am working on a correct reproduction walnut veneer insert with a thin metal backing, as they were originally. I was going to do door panels first, but I have an NOS console insert as a pattern for the console insert. Email me direct if you are interested in the reproduction part, I can try to speed up the development process if there is some interest in the product. Thanks, Jeff

Re: Recreating Inserts
There should be a great demand for these. In judging interiors, I am constantly asked about where to find these. Bill Carpenter in AZ (?) is making the door inserts, but said he had trouble with his supplier having pieces large enough to make the consoles. (He has an ad in DRIVELINE.) I think the original pieces were walnut, not teak.- Top
