I am going to get a chrome alternator for my 82 vette. Ecklers has 2 under 1982. one is 85 amp and one is 140 amp. The car is L83-(350cc 200hp.) Does it matter which one I get. Is there such a thing as a correct one in chrome??

70 amp was the highest rated alternator originally used for any 1982 Corvette. So, neither the 85 amp nor the 140 amp are what could have been originally used. Believe me, ABSOLUTELY NO 1982 Corvette was EVER originally fitted with a chrome alternator. Absolutely NONE.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 82 vette chrome alternator.
Joe--Thanks for the response. I am into looks more than performance obviously. Chrome and silver green go together beautifully. If 70 amps was good enough for the original cars then why would Ecklers offer 85 amp and 140 amp alternators . Whats the difference and why would someone spend 70 bucks extra for a 140 amp one vs an 85. Thanks again.- Top

70 amps is MORE than adequate for the electrical needs of any STOCK 1982 Corvette. However, if one adds a lot of electrical load, then higher amperage may be required. Primarily, this would involve the addition of sound systems with MONSTER amplifiers. With such systems, even more than 140 amps may be required.
C4 Corvettes which had much more in the way of electrical loads used higher amperage alternators. However, I believe that even these "maxed out" at 140 amps. This was a different design alternator than those used in C3 Corvettes, though. And, NO C3 Corvette ever originally used an alternator even close to 140 amps. I think about 85 amps was the highest and it was used on some late 70s Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
