I just received my first issue of Driveline and was unable to find a vendor ad for someone who sells metallic brake shoes for my 1962....didn't even find info on a vendor who might re-build my old ones. Is that something that might be found in the larger vendor's catalogs? I haven't done much in the past many years to keep abreast, and would appreciate any info (before I become in dire need of new brakes). Thanks, John #42038

Re: '62 metallic brakes
I don't know of anyone who can reline the shoes with the OE metallic material. It makes no difference for judging since none of the features of RPO 686/J-65 can be visually verified during judging.
Occasionally a set of NOS metallic shoes will show up for sale, but they are usually hideously expensive and not worth the price IMO.
If your driving style is less than "aggresive" ordinary organic linings should be satisfactory. If you drive aggresively or just want the best current lining material contact www.carbontecheng.com.
The proprietor is a 686/J-65 driving veteran, and he says his carbon metallic linings will provide similar fade resistance to the OE metallic linings with much more consistent performance/response over the full range of operating temperatures.
I still have a relatively fresh set of the OE metallic linings on my SWC, which will probably never wear out, but if I needed new linings I would sent the shoes to Carbotech for relining.
