A friend just bought this 1960 big brake fuel car 290 hp. It has a 3 speed in it and has the right shifter consol for the 3 speed. We have not looked at the trans. dates yet. Were there any cars built like this? Has any one ever seen a car like this? thanks john

Re: 1960 Big brake fuelie 3 speed?
At this point my only comment would be, yeah, you could probably order a car with a 290 HP FI engine with a 3 speed without breaking any laws other the laws of common sense. Does that make it really special? No, just a wonderment...- Top

I have an old Dan Gurney road test...
...article "How Hot is the Mustang", where he road tests a 289HP 4-speed convertible Mustang. He pointed out that he thought that with the wide power range of the engine, and the 4.11 rear, that only a 3-speed was necessary. Different times, different philosophy. You will often see references from this period to "standard" transmissions. They mean 3-speed manual. Today that would mean 4-speed automatic.- Top

"Standard transmission," then and now, refers to a manual transmission without regard to the number of forward gears included. "Standard" is one of the few terms that has not changed its meaning to encompass present automotive equipment.- Top

Re: If wheels are REAL, grab them...
It was interesting seeing your question about the 59 FI with a 3 speed. I was at a Corvette show in the Boston area last Sunday 7/18/04. I saw a very nice 59 FI with a 3 speed transmission. I thought it was odd and asked the owner about it. He said the car came that way from the factory.- Top
