            Jack,

            Better ask Dickey that question.

                    The obvious question.....

which no one has asked, is whether you used some sort of thread sealant on the sender. If so, remove it. That will get you a low reading almost every time. Most folks that have tried the Wells TU5 from Autozone (and probably some other places) have reported good results. That doesn't mean that they necessarily will work with your particular gauge. Other people have reported similar failures with the Lectric Limited version as well, so some gauges just are out of the range that will work with these senders. They probably wouldn't work with a true NOS sender either.

Have you shot the radiator hose just above the water outlet with your IR gun? I can get 180-185 on the hose and 200 or higher on the semi-gloss T-stat housing. Just a thought.

I can try that. Good idea.

I tried the meat thermometer approach mentioned in this thread and it read only about 160-170 max, so I don't think I was able to get a good thermal connection. I drove in the parade however and the temp stayed just above the first mark all the time, except when the car was shut down and allowed to heat soak where it was closer to the 210 mark then quickly dropped back.

Also, I actually read the owners manual on the temp guage for the first time, and was surprised to see that it says "normal" is the 210 mark, and on hot days with lots of idling it can "normally" rise to the next mark!! I have never seen it over there, and I thought that was overheating!
