To grind or not to grind....

Miked up my 70 LS-5 crank today. Mains are .001 under, rods vary from .001-.0015 under standard. What would you guys recommend - put .001 under bearings in or grind it to .010/.010?

    Thanks in advance -

If it were me and the journals were not irregularly worn and could be polished to be smooth and clean, I'd go with the .001" undersize bearings.

      Joe:

It is my quandry.... They are marginal - with a fresh crank buffer it will most likely take .005 more off of them. That could take some of the rods to close to .002 under. It is a difficult decision -- so close but unsure whether to take a chance. I get less than .005 out of round but there are some minor grooves. A polishing would remove them but then I think .002 would be required. Knowing this what would you do?

        Do the job right.......

turn them, no margin for error as the journals will be true. Nothing wrong with .010 under journals.

Based upon what you now describe, your best plan is to have the crank ground 10/10. Or, if it were me, I'd get a new crank. Now that's not necessarily the SENSIBLE thing to do, but, it's what I'd probably do. I never said that I was sensible.
