    C1 Leaf Springs

Bubba "fixed" my leaf springs on my 1960. Some of the leaves in each set is original, ie. has the groove, while the other pieces are flat spring stock. Each set though has five leaves. The only markings I have been able to find on the bottom spring are " 28 E O ".
The standard spring set for a 1960 was four leaves, but it seems that every picture I've seen of a 1960 leaf spring shows five leaves, even though five leaf springs were not available in 1960. See page 82 of the 58 - 60 TIM & JG. When you count the leaves do you count the main spring as one and then should have three more pieces ( or four more if a five leafer)? Or am I making something simple more difficult than it is! How rare are replacement leaves with the groove.

Thanks in advance for showing the light!

    Rod -
I was able to buy (original, groovy, used) leaves from Mary Jo (VetteGal.com) for my '58. She also had complete spring assemblies. Email me if you like, I went through rebuilding mine a couple of years back.

Hi Rod - I'll take a shot at it based on my 62 similarities. It's my understanding that all rear C1 springs were 4 leaf with the grooves, counting the top main spring. Those that wanted a stiffer set up for racing or whatever added one flat leaf, with no groove. The archives have indicated that no 5-leaf sets were on factory configurations.

The number you see is the date of manufacture in Julian Calendar terms, that is the 28th day of 1960, and the E represents Eaton as the manufacturer. On the same leaf, on the other side of the center bolt hole. you should also see a 7-digit part number for the spring assy. My 62 # is 3751433.

I'm sure others will add more....Regards, Dick

57-59 were available with 5-leaf springs as part of the optional brake/suspension package. 60-62 had only 4-leaf, although you could still buy the 5-leaf over the counter. 5-leaves had a different part number on the lower shortest leaf. Grossmueller's have a rebuild service for them, and have many pieces/parts in stock.

                Mike

Where was the extra spring added, top, bottom or middle? I don't suppose you can just take one out of a five and make it a four?
