    mid year vinyl - paint?

Anyone have any experience with some of these new vinyl paints for my dash?

Mine is in good shape except for the black is a little faded, and seems like too much of a job to replace the skins.

But you know how it's going to look after I replace the carpet, trim pieces etc.!!!!!

    Thanks,

    Mark #22477

I sprayed my dash with vinyl paint. If you have a good painter they can tint to match and its great and durable. Can't remember the product right now.

I have dyed lots of stuff. I use a product called SEM sand...free or something(spray can white on top and gray/green on bottem). its a prep you put on first before you apply the dye, it opens the pours in the vinyl(so I have been told). I dont let it dry before spraying the first coat of dye. light coats is a must. I used a heat gun in my other hand to dry it as soon as it hits the vinyl(not to close and not to hot). Stops fish eyes dead in there tracks and I get my best results this way. As for a brand of dye, Tried a bunch of them and found no real problems between them. I would recommend going to a "good" auto upholstery and buying something from them. dont get he cheap stuff unless you like doing things mutliple times. good luck

        Mark,

I just restored the interior on my 71 roadster. I dyed every interior part except for the seats and carpet which I replaced. Your dash is vinyl and requires a different prep material than hard plastic. Do not use SEM Sand Free on vinly. It is for hard plastic only. Use SEM Vinyl Prep. Here is a link to SEM's web site: http://www.semproducts.com I discovered them when researching my restoration. Their web site has a very informative tech section on how to use their products. You can purchase from ZIP, or your local auto paint store. As for the type of dye, my interior is red and I found it hard to get the proper shade. I ended up buying a can from each supplier and went with the one that was the closest match. I am told you should not have this problem with black. Another thing to consider is are you going to dye the dash in the car or out? I thought about doing it in car since it is a major pain to get it out of the car, but I am glad I took it out. I think you will have a difficult time spraying the dye in the corners and edge next to the windshield. Perhaps you could go with the quart can and wipe it on. Good luck.

        John
