    '57 Brake Backing Plate Problem

At the top of the Brake Backing Plates there is a flat sub plate with two tabs. These tabs measure approx. .5 wide x .25 thick and are bent outward from the Backing Plate at a 45 degree angle. The tabs straddle the ends of the wheel cylinder. One of the tabs are broken off on each of the Rear Backing Plates. On the right rear Plate, the right tab is broken off, on the left rear Plate the left tab is broken off. Nothing else is damaged and there are no signs of any wear on the Backing Plates.

    Questions:
    1. What could cause these tabs to break? (They are quite substantial!)
    2. What is the function of these tabs?
    3. Is there any logical reason that these tabs would have been removed intentionally?

I would like to fabricate new tabs and have them welded on to the backing plate.
Any comments or suggestions on the repair of these Backing Plates would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks and Best Wishes!

Bob--My suspicion is that they didn't break--that they were broken by someone, possibly to mount an incorrect wheel cylinder. Their primary function, to my way of thinking, is to properly locate and secure the wheel cylinder. With those there, the cylinder can't go anywhere, and couldn't think of breaking a brake line and leaving you without brakes. If you'd rather not repair those, let me know--I'm pretty sure I have a pair that are in good shape.

If by chance the push rod came of the brake shoe , they will keep the cylinder piston from being blow out leaving you with no brakes at all by losing all brake fluid.

If that is the case as Roy says, and it sounds logical, then someone may have broken those off to rebuild the wheel cylinder without removing the cylinder or because they couldn't remove the cylinder.
