    Best engine compartment paint

What is the best paint and exact finish? Also there is overspray all over the wiper compartment. Car been repainted. I assume this areae should be painted the same color as the rest of the engine compartment. Is this correct?

    Re: Best engine compartment paint

Steve, correct engine and wiper compartment blackout color is semi-flat or semi-gloss black. John Deere "Blitz Black" or Krylon 1613 should work.

One detail that needs to be done properly is the narrow ledge between the engine compartment and the wiper compartment: this ledge is also blacked out and not body color. At the fenders, the body color is masked in a straight line from the corner radius directly back to wiper compartment. Resulting paint line was straight, but fuzzy and indistinct because it was done with a paper mask.

        Chuck,

Realize that your comment regading blackout on the trough between the engine compartment and wipers is applicable to only 1968 and later cars...and he didn't state the year of his car. A mideyar could well have overspray under the wiper grilles too, and need to be black.

I know, Doc, all Corvettes are not C3s. But, I cheated...I read his profile before I responded. Steve has a 70 numbers matching Laguna Gray 350/300 that he wants to do factory original.

Well, then I prefer the engine compartment paint from Eastwood to the Krylon. I just don't find the Krylon good for much, but that's my $0.02. Usually I can find a better paint than the Krylon for almost any application.

I used NAPA brand "underhood black". I tried it on an out of sight spot under the hood, and it matched EXACTLY to my original blackout. Covers well, dries fast, and doesn't cover the rest of the car with overspray. Great product.

The best underhood black paint? That's easy----GM #1050104. Unfortunately, it's discontinued. So, like most things, there's good news and bad news.

                            Well, otay then, Patrick!

Actually, I try to avoid spray cans whenever possible using them only for small jobs. I can't claim to have made a exhaustive survey, or even to have used many spray cans recently. Over the years, there has been a lot of feedback from restorers regarding accuracy of Krylon gloss level.

I think I remember someone (you?) saying Krylon was difficult to spray without runs? Most of this newer stuff is hard to spray without runs: Don't hold the nozzle too close; Don't try to apply a "wet" coat; Don't go back over a freshly sprayed surface to "touch it up"; Apply paint slowly and methodically; Be prepared to accept something less than perfection. Th most recent spray cans I used were Rustoleom Black Satin...not as bad as the worst, but still subject to runs if you got it too wet.

Since Eastwood paints have to be ordered, and most of their product is on the pricey side, their black paint is now less likely to get a trial unless I have real problems finding adequate coating at Home Depot. I still have an unopened can or two of their "Chassis Black" that I bought in my youth for "gloss variety".

Joe is correct. The right stuff was GM 1050104, but it is gone without newbies ever having experienced it. I still have about a half-gallon.
