A-arm resto @ VanSteeel; powder coat underlayer?

I was talking with someone at VanSteel this morning about sending them my A-arm for restoration and ball joint riveting. After I mentioned that I did not want powder coat, but rather I wanted the old-fashion regular paint technique, the person said that what some people (NCRS included) are doing is having the A-arms powder coated and then after drying they scuff sand the powder coat surface and then top coat with regular paint. Has anyone had this done and not had the resulting paint look too thick? It seems to me that one problem with powder coat is paint build-up, so I worry that adding regular paint on top of powder coat would clearly lead to a paint layer that is too thick. Yes? No?

Re: Not to mention the cost of burried P/C

Seems like alot of work and money spent just to burry the powder coating with paint.

The appearance I would think would be significantly smoother and more rounded on curves and edges than originally supplied by the General by the layering process.

    Just my opinion.

        Too smooth and more rounded...

        Chuck,

That's what I would predict too. I'd just like to hear some others confirm that for me, but maybe if they opted for P/C they're not going to want to admit it in public.

There are several shades of black P/C available, I would opt for a dulled black finish similar to DP90.

Gary - I have Eastwood Pro powder gun, and use it for certain things, but not so far on my 66 or 67. The durability is great, and appearance is great, BUT as you surmize there is a build that doesn't occur with paint, and a tendency to "fill" pits etc. Now, for the average hot rod resto guy, this is way cool. For us anal NCRS types, not so good. But I still really like the PC setup, even if I don't use it on my vette stuff......Craig
