    Re: MA6 heavy duty clutch

I believe the M22 was an L88 only option in 1969 - 102 made, the same number as the 99 4 speed L88's and the two ZL1's.

Yes, for 1969, the M-22 was only available with HD big blocks (L-88/ZL-1). As such, there was never a 1969 with MA-6 clutch that was also equipped with M-22. The options were "mutually exclusive".

For 1971 it was very possible, though, inasmuch as ALL LS-6 with manual transmission were equipped with the dual disc clutch and the M-22 was available with LS-6. Consequently, for 1971 ALL LS-6 also equipped with M-22 did have the dual disc clutch.

                L88 Clutch different

Wasn't the L88 clutch based on the 12.5 inch flywheel ofr a 10.5 inch clutch? The 12 lb wheel that Chevy sold over the counter as an L88 flywheel was.

Is so, then the MA-6 isn't an issue with the L88 since the L88 had the small flywheel.

Wasn't the MA-6 using the 11 inch clutch even with the dual disc? That is a tremendous amount of grabbing power but a tremendous about of rotating mass. Most aftermarket multiple disc clutches used much smaller disks. I had a triple disk setup that ran 8 inch disks. Many of the 4 disk and 5 disk setups run a 6 inch and 5 inch diameter.

                    Mike-----

The L-88 did use a 12-3/4" flywheel and a 10-1/2" clutch. The flywheel, originally GM #3866735, is still available under GM #14085720. The 10-1/2" pressure plate assembly, originally GM #3886066 and last available under GM #6273958, is discontinued. The 10-1/2" friction disc was GM #3886059 and it's long-since discontinued, too.

The MA-6 dual disc clutch used a special 14" flywheel of GM #3955151. The pressure plate assembly, originally of GM #3959175 and last available as GM #231254, had a cover diamter of 11-3/4" OD and used dual plates of 10" OD. The dual friction plates, originally of GM #3959176, were 10" OD. All of these parts are long-since discontinued.

                        dual disk clutch

The feel of this clutch in operation is totally different than the single disk. Lower pedal pressure, and all the action takes place in the center third (or so it feels) of the pedal range. A blind person could tell the difference between a dual disk and single disk in a Corvette.

                            Re: L88 Clutch different

I don't know how Chevy ever expected a 10-1/2 inch clutch to live behind an L88. The one we built from parts for the '66 took the 10-1/2 inch clutch and shredded it to pieces. Replaced it with a heavier race item replacement for the L88. Didn't shred the material off the disc (as bad) but ripped the hub out.

That is when I went to the triple disk.

It is too bad when Chevy thought of a dual disk, they didn't use the 10-1/2 inch setup instead of the 11.

The L88 flywheel and 10-1/2 inch clutch lived well behind the 302 and worked very well with its desire for high RPM.

Re: L88 Clutch use a single disk

with the lining bonded to thin aluminum and then rivited together. the reason i know this is that my 68 Z-28 kept throwing the lining off of the clutch disk because of the 8000 rpm power shifts so bill howell at GM set me up with the L-88 clutch disk. i have no idea why GM came out with that dual disk clutch setup because it just added weight to the rotating assy and made for slow acceleration and more work for the tranny synchronizers
