When I bought my 65 L79 some years ago, it was missing the steering damper and hardware. This was not a high priority project so I am just now getting around to replacing it. This was going to be an easy Saturday afternoon project - wrong! The relay rod bracket interferes with the oil pan. After about 20 minutes of head scratching I surmised that this must not be the correct pan. I checked the archives and looks like I might be opening up a whole can of worms here. Apparently the correct pan is no longer available. I guess there is also possibility that correct pan will not even fit my existing timing chain cover. Where can I find a correct oil pan? No listing for one on ebay. How do I know if I will need to replace my timing chain cover? Any advice would be appreciated!

Don,
I think you need to check that pan as it may be correct for your car. I remember some discussion on this board about 350 horsepower cars not having the steering damper from the factory and they also could not be ordered with power steering because of the oil pan clearance. Before you pull the pan, consider that your car may not have come with a steering damper. I think the early L79's came with the higher capacity pan that does interfere with a damper or power steering equipment.
The judging and part number gurus must be out enjoying their Saturday and so have not answered yet. When they do, all will be revealed. If you're worried about judging, the NCRS manual would be a good place to start. If you're concerned about performance, don't. Many HP cars came without the damper and are currently running around just fine.Comment

Thanks Chris for the responses. You bring up a good point. The car is a late '65 with a build date of May 5th, so I would assume it would have been delivered with the damper. The pan has the vertical ribs on the sides, consistent with the description for the 5 qt oil pan in the JG. However, the lower sump is over 13" long, which is consistent with the description for the 6 qt pan. I'm not really planning on getting the car judged, but as I have been restoring the car, I am trying to get everything as correct as I can.

In my opinion, your car now has the wrong
oil pan; effective with the availability of Power Steering with the 350 in March or so, these motors came with the 11" long pan that took one less quart - there was NO steering dampner with the 350 HP.Comment

If the 350 HP P/S option was listed as being available in March, I would have to guess that there were no P/S cars actually built before mid or late April and to at least that point, they were using the current stock of engines that had the large oil pan. If orders were placed in late March, the estimated production date would have been several weeks later, which might have moved the first P/S cars closer to the beginning of May. If the car seems to be reasonably close to original, I would probably want to do a little more research before changing anything.Comment

Thanks for the info. The car has the original motor and heads. However, the motor was rebuilt before I owned it, so it's entirely possible the pan was replaced with the rebuild.Comment
