    John-----

The GM #3989075 baffle was shorter than the 3927136. Otherwise, it was similarly configured, though. It was retained by 3 studs rather than the 5 used for the 3927136; the baffle did not extend to the #2 main cap position (no baffle I know of extends to the #1 main cap position). I had to trim just a "skoche" from the front of the 3989075 to get it to fit the 3820000 pan without interference. I think that it would be possible to trim much more off the front of a 3927136 and "convert" it to the 3989075 size and configuration.

I don't recall any plug in the block under the rear main cap for small blocks. Check to see if any of the holes are threaded as if for a plug installation. I don't think you find any threads and I know there were no soft (drive-in) plugs used in this area.

The main cap torque specs for 327 passenger car engines as published by GM is 75 lb/ft. That's what I'd use. Trucks are 70 lb/ft. I don't know why the difference. Although no 327 ever used 4 bolt mains, the torque spec for the outer bolts of 1969+ 302 and 350 cid engines with 4 bolt mains is 65 lb/ft.

plug in the verticle oil passage

insert a 1/8" diameter rod about 12" long into the oil pressure sending hole at the top rear of the block and it should stop about 8 1/4" down if the plug is in there. with the rear cap off and the plug not in place the rod will fall thru.

            Joe-
Thanks for the discourse and info on the different oil pan baffles. Much appreciated.

            Clem-
Thanks for providing the oil passage check dimension. Come to think of it, I think I have some 1/8" ceiling wire in the garage ..
