    Fuel Injection Air Cleaner Color

I was watching a discussion here several days ago about the color of the fuel injection air cleaner fresh air tube. The topic was the degree of flatness in the black paint and I think I'm more confused now than I was before reading the posts. What is the color supposed to be? We won't be at the painting point on the FI car for quite a while but I'd like to get this resolved. What are the screws supposed to be? Seems there's several different opinions. We have no screws at all and we'd like to know what to start looking for.

Also, is the reproduction glove box door full point or is there a deduction? Thanks

    Tom,

I'm sure Michael hasn't seen this post but he will respond when he reads this. The point of the FI AC Color was the "S" tube and not the AC body. The AC body was and should be gloss black as it was made and painted by AC Delco. The "S" tube from the radiator support to the AC body was a dipped part as were many other parts. The "S" tube should be semi-gloss or somewhat flatter depending on the age. The screws that hold the "S" tube to the radiator support were 5/16" heads with the "L" logo to about S/N 9000 and then changed to the 1/4" tall heads.

Also, the point that the Judging Manual has some errors along this line was revealed. It should be changed to reflect what was originally put on the 63's in St. Louis.

Tom, go out and find what is correct and paint your AC body and "S" tube correctly. The Judging Manual will be changed to reflect the correct finishes on these parts.

    Regards,

    JR

looking for "L" logo'd fasteners: remove the drivers side kick panel and locate the relay that is fastened to the metal portion of the door pillar. if you're lucky, the two fastenrs will be "L" heads. mike

            Tom,

As of today, there probably is no correct answer unless you tell us your intentions with the completed car. Currently, there would have to be two totally different answers for each question you asked. If the car is near completion and you are going to show it soon at an NCRS event, then you may want to consider going with the NCRS recommendations.

However, if the restoration is not near completion, I would definitely recommend searching for the "L" head screws no matter what your time build is. The "L" head continued a few months into 1964 model production. I don't think there's a judge in the country that would deduct for "L" head screws, even on a late build car.

The "S" tube should be semi gloss black. It was dipped in the stuff and nice originals definitely show the drips and runs. This was a GM part, as previously mentioned by Jorjorian. Gm didn't paint under hood items gloss black. The main air cleaner can was a different story. It was manufactured and painted at AC, the folks that painted all the air cleaners gloss black. I don't think you would ever have a deduction on the paint either. I can't even imagine a judge ever saying, with certainty, that this item was indeed gloss black.

I don't have any information on the I.P. door. Perhaps someone that knows about this can answer that part of your question.

Thank you all. The FI car won't be ready for judging this year so I'll go with your suggestions.
