l heads jerry wallace a few weeks ago we started a body off restoration on a l coupe it seems to be all there including correct part numbers and date codes this weekend when we pulled off the valve covers we got somewhat of a surprise the part numbers on both heads are the left head is dated and the right head is dated by this part number the heads match to an ls engine it is common knowledge that there were no ls engines produced for retail sales could these heads be gm over the counter replacements or what

Re: 1969 L71 heads
re l heads bill clupper it's pretty obvious from the casting dates that the heads were a later replacement the ' heads were used on chevelles in ' the most significant difference from the ' heads being the use of a inch dia exhaust valve in place of the inch exhaust used in ' could these have been service replacement who knows i believe that ' was the last year for the year mile warranty program so the car still could have been under warranty well into the early 's only the owner or the dealer handling the warranty service would know for sure- Top

Re: 1969 L71 heads
re l heads joe lucia your heads are very likely service replacement heads however it is not accurate to say that there were no ls engines produced for retail sale it does seem pretty clear that there were no corvettes produced with ls engines however ls engines were produced for sale as crate engines those sold in the early seventies included aluminum heads the ls engine was available as a crate engine until about or years ago but most of the later versions were equipped with cast iron cylinder headsIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
