62 Exhaust / Road Draft tube

Could someone please send a picture of the relationship of the Road Draft tube to the exhaust pipe? Mine seem to be trying to occupy the same space. As always Thanks in advance.

Terry, I think you are talking about the exhaust system and I have not installed my engine yet but here are some pictures of my tube on my engine. Look at pics 11, 12, 13.

        Terry-

Please ignore the uh, UPC sticker on the lower clutch cover, hopefully this is helpful. Not the greatest pic, but the tube runs inboard of the exhaust. Yell if you want a better pic, I'll see what I can do.

          Love the pics.
          Wish I had access to '62 250/300 hp engine/vehicle.

In-depth photos like this would sure help out us novices.

Oh, Chris will be happy to tell you what a novice I am 8-), but I've got a decent digital camera and lots of web storage, so if anyone wants pics of any part of a red/red '62-340, I'm happy to shoot and upload pics.

If the pictures comment was aimed toward me I can tell you as most people can on this site, I am a novice at this. First Corvette. Really have not done any real car work, (well, did spend 23 years at GM as an engineer), since I "restored/painted" a bunch of cars in high school and college to make money.

                Terry,
I don't know if this is a replacement draft tube of not, but all smallblock draft tubes are not created equal. There are at least two types out there that do not wrap around the starter, but instead go straight down for the last 10" or so. Obviously, these draft tubes will not work on Corvettes due to exhaust pipe interference. The correct tube for your car will have two discrete bends in the last 10-12 inches or so, which makes the tube wrap around the starter fairly tightly.

                Regards, John McGraw

John, does this Paragon tube have the bends you are talking about? I bought a NOS part that looks like this one because I had an earlier style with more bends at the top.

I have not installed in car yet but my old part looked similar in the starter area except my NOS one wraps under the starter a bit more. But the old one did fit before I replaced it.

This link is to the earlier style which I had:

                    Chris,
That looks like the it! You are correct that the other one was for earlier model Corvettes. You will notice that the early model one only had one bend in the last 12" or so, while the later model one had the same first bend, and a more discrete second bend a couple of inches down from it. There is also a couple of types of draft tubes in the junkyards on which the last portion of the tube is almost vertical. I believe these tubes were used on trucks and busses, and they will not fit since the exhaust is right under where they discharge. They also turn toward the firewall as soon as they leave the block and will hit the bonding flange on the firewall long before they line up correctly.

                    Regards, John McGraw

                      P.S.

                      Chris,
I will have to check my notes when I get to the house, but I believe that the early and later model tubes used different lower clamps as well. My reccolection, is that the clamp is longer on the early model, and by using the early model clamp on the later model tube, it will move the tube a little further away from the starter.

                      Regards, John McGraw

                        John,
The '56 road tube clamp and into '57 year (I'm not sure when the changeover occured) was attached to the starter LOWER bolt. The '56/'57 AIM shows the clamp atached to the top starter bolt. A '56 owner with '56 pieces trying to follow the AIM will go nuts trying to attach the clamp to the top bolt! AIM always shows latest production configuration. Regards,
