    Tapered bearing question

Are the races for tapered bearings matched to their counter part or are they spit out into a bin and just put together with rollers from another bin?

I can't imaging for the voluum of bearings manufactured, that they would all be sized and matched by hand.......maybe...

    Chuck-----

The bearing assemblies and outer races ("cups") are NOT matched as a set. They may have been once-upon-a-time, but they are no more. In fact, many Timken roller bearings are packaged and sold with the bearings and races seperate. So, you have to buy the bearing and you have to buy the race under their seperate part numbers. Obviously, the bearings and races could not require matching under this scenario. I believe that modern precision manufacturing methods have eliminated the need for bearing and race matching, if there ever was such a need.

Also, many SERVICE GM disc brake front hub assemblies were supplied with the installed bearing races, but no bearings were supplied. So, you had to purchase a bearing assembly, without race (or, bearing assembly with race and discard the race), and install it. You could also re-use the existing bearing with the new race installed in the hub. I would never do this, but I'll bet that's exactly what was done about 90% of the time.

That's what I was thinking but was curious as to just how quality control played into O.E. and current components and interchangebility (is that a word ).

Thanks for the hit back Joe,

      How's your project coming along?

The project has been held up while I am waiting for GM to release a special, new windage tray that they have developed for the ZL-1. It's been delayed repeatedly and I've been "holding off" final assembly of the rest of the engine figuring that the day I button it all up will be the day that the piece gets to be available. But, it's just gone on too long now and I may just give up and finish it up with the original style windage tray. That will, theoretically, save me a lot of money, too. The new windage tray GM lists for about $315; the old style about $25 and I have several, already. Unfortunately, I'll buy the new tray, anyway, when it becomes available, so I won't really be saving any money. Why? Well, I've just GOT to see what a $315 windage tray looks like "in the flesh"!

Maybe looks like the high dollar hammers the military bought a few years back?

That your project was held up answering Chuck's foolish questions

            You had your chance Joe.

If your power plant looks and performs anything like that aluminum power plant Boyd put in that aluminum hot rod on TV, that will be sweet!

Not to mention the the pony power huh?

$315.00 for a windage tray? Guess I'll just keep on roaming the junk yards Joe
