Having trouble locating a fuel vapor separator and the ONE I have found is very expensive. Can I just plug the line from the tank to the separator and also the vacuum line to the canister? Do I also have to get a vented gas cap if I end up having to go this way?

You can do as you suggest without creating functional problems. However, the car's fuel vapor recovery system will be eliminated. If you have to undergo emissions inspections, it may be discerned and be a cause for failure.
You DO NOT have to convert to a vented gas cap if you make this mod. Your car's fuel tank has an integral pressure vacuum valve.
The 70-74 fuel seperators have been discontinued for quite awhile and are the sort of parts that degrade with time. I really don't understand why someone hasn't come on the market yet with a reproduction. I would not expect that the tooling to manufacture, at least, a functional replacement for this part would be all that expensive to create. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
