    C3 gas tank preventative maintenance

Now that I have to replace the "replacement" gas tank, is there any recommended liquid liner etc/exterior coating that I should consider using so this one doesn't rust out as quichly as the previous one?

    Keep it full.

Don't let the same gas since for more than a few weeks at a time.

Drive the car more than once a year.

    Stay out of salted snow.

Go to the Eastwood site. They have a fuel tank refurbishment kit. After you treat the inside of the tank (when the tank's out of the car), you pour some white goop in there that seals the whole thing. Designed for old rusty tanks. But I don't see why it wouldn't work on a new tank. Of course, I also don't see why you'd need it for a new tank. Eastwood also sells some galvanizing paint in a rattle can. I've used both of these products on an old rusty tank, and they worked great.

Seeing as these cars will NEVER see the types of abuse indulged on them years ago, I would agree with Chris and Mike that clean gas rolled over on a regular basis will be more than adequate to prevent internal rusting.

I would be more concerned with exterior finish protection. If you don't have to worry about judging dings, how about a fuel resistant clear coat covering over the new tank's exterior?

Looking at my tank setup Dave, my bigger worry is deterioration of the straps and hangers more than the tank, Man they were a mess!

I can vouch for the salt deal as can you Huh?

There's nothing like a coastal Florida project car ) The replacement tank looked almost new. It was only when I touched the sides and made a nice dent in it did I realize the rust in the top of the tank,(and in the carburetor). Agree that this baby won't see the abuse of it's former day, but finding an acceptable treatment for the inside of the tank wouldn't hurt. It seems that current quality steel seems more susceptible to corrosion than I remember older stock was. And a zinc coating to the exterior would add protection (and point deductions). I realize this may be a knee jerk reaction to the rust dust I've been breathing the past 13 months.

Re: My not so quick gas tank story

When I finished (what the other guy started) pulling the car apart, I noted that the gas tank was a replacement with a 1977 ship tag on it.

In talking with the prior owner, he mentioned that he was sure that old tank was still setting up in the rafters of the garage he had replace the tank.

With the potential of possibly retrieving the tank sticker, I called the guy's garage..disconnected.

Not to be denied, I called the guy's house.

Yep, the ole guy HAD kept the tank and was going to repair it (had a split seam).

Well he never got around to it and had sold the business to a developer who leveled the garage six months ago for a bank project.

And yep again, he remembered a paper that was stuck to it!

I tell ya, if it weren't for bad luck

I live in Florida also and I am keeping my tank full most of the time, and I have been putting a couple bottles of dry gas in ocasionaly. The inside of the tank looks like new.I am hoping that if the dry gas disipates water I won,t have any rust.Maybe a waste of money but it seems to work for me.I don't know if the tank is original or not. The tank sticker is gone.but being a 69 I doubt if it is original.

The Eastwood Galvanizing paint I bought in a rattle can looked like crap when I put it on a tank and plugged up the tip. I have bought new tanks for all my cars as I like the look and the price is not worth the risk of wire brushing on an old tank. Lyle

POR 15 Clearcoat. Brushed it on the out side of my original 71 tank and that was five years ago and it still looks good and rust free.

POR 15 can be used inside the tank too, but the same company also makes a product just for that purpose. My 67 tank had ZERO rust on the inside when I had it out a couple of years ago in central Texas. It sat with only a few gallons on gas in it for a long long time hardly ever driven. The gas went bad sitting in the tank. Even so, there was no rust on the inside and only a small spot under one strap on the outside. I cleaned it up and put on back on the car. The original tanks must have been fairly well plated I'm thinking.

                      Correction on paint

It was Eastwood Gas tank coating I tried to use. It came out real thick and pluged up after lots of shaking. Lyle
