U-joint grease

I attempted to save eveyone the anoyance of responding to an old topic, but I could not for the life of me find it in the archives, so ........

I have a gun full of synthetic grease and would like to use it on the new universal joints.

Question: Am I required to purge the original grease from these new joints, or will both types properly interact with each other?

If the conventional grease and the synthetic grease are both lithium based, there will be no compatibility problem. If the bases are different, then, technically, the greases are incompatible. However, for a low speed application like u-joints it really shouldn't be a problem.

If it were me, though, I wouldn't mix grease types. That's why for my car I use GM #12377985 for all chassis applications except wheel bearings and Valvoline SynPower Synthetic grease #985 (meets GM spec 1051344) for wheel bearings. I keep one grease gun filled with each and clearly labeled as to which it contains.

My syn. grease IS lithium based.
