I currently have a problem with my 1962 327 250 HP overheating. The car did not have a history of overheating until this mid-winter when I started it up and I left it running for a while in the driveway. The car overheated with coolant in the surge tank boiling. I pulled the thermostat (no obvious blockage noted) and checked its operation by putting it in hot water and it opened completely and closed completely when cooled. I had the radiator cleaned and flushed. The radiator cap is fairly new and appears to be operating properly. The water pump is not leaking and it appears to be circulating coolant because I can feel flow through the upper radiator hose when the thermostat opens. I am trying to determine if the fan clutch is the issue. Prior to starting the car, the fan turns freely. After the engine is hot and coolant is boiling I shut the engine off and I noticed no change way the fan spins free. Is this the proper operation of the fan clutch or is it supposed to engage when hot and not spin the fan free? ALso any other suggestions that I may have overlooked in troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Re: 1962 250 HP Overheating/Fan Clutch Operation
When the engine is hot, the fan should tighten up with respect to the shaft so as to move more air. It sounds like you need a fan clutch replacement/rebuild.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Tim:
The fan clutch should not spin more than 2 revolutions after shutdown of a hot engine. If you do not see any oil at the clutch shaft, then you might not want to condemn the clutch just yet. That is the short answer.
For the long answer, you might want to talk to Fred Oliva, who will absolutely give you a straight answer. Contact info at:

Re: 1962 250 HP Overheating/Fan Clutch Operation
I replaced the fan clutch this weekend and it appeared to cure the problem. There was no evidence that the old one had failed. I am not sure if the old unit is an orignal type. If so, does someone restore them? The new fan clutch I installe dis a repalcement type.- Top
