My tach cable (65 327/365) is broken and I have a replacement, but the tach drive gear (tach cable unit not the distributor gear) also has a section broken out of it. What's the proper procedure for replacing the tach drive gear and getting it meshed correctly with the distributor gear? Thanks, Earle

Re: Broken Tach Gear

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if your tach drive gear ("cross shaft gear") has " a section out of it", it is very likely that the gear with which it meshes (the gear on the vertical distributor mainshaft) is also damaged. I would not install a new cross gear until I was satisfied that the mainshaft gear was serviceable. Unfortunately, to properly inspect this gear, and certainly to replace it if necessary, you must remove the distributor from the car and dis-assemble it. If you do this, I also recommend the installation of a brass thrust button in the rear of the housing against which the end of the cross shaft gear will ride. The lack of a suitable thrust surface in the housing is what causes most of these gears to fail. GM corrected this in 1970 by adding a nylon thrust button to all PRODUCTION and earlier model SERVICE distributors.
If you wish to just install the cross shaft gear and hope for the best, all you need to do is to remove the brass coupling from the distributor, insert the new gear, and re-install the coupling. Tighten it just slightly beyond hand tight. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
