Due to excessive noise, I've replaced the power steering pump on my 72 coupe. But, eventhough the steering operation is now quiet and somewhat smoother, steering seems somewhat more sensitive in right turns than in left turns. The system is leak free and I am about to replace the power steering control valve in hopes of correcting this condition. Am I overlooking something? Thanks for any help.

72 power steering
Been there Michael.Hope you can adjust the control valve satisfactorily but if you can not - here is my story. I did the "adjust the nut in little increments" thing on the control valve. It would always dart to the left or right and never seemed to want to steer streight nor have a proper castor effect ( wheel wants to return to streight position when let go.) After replacing pump, slave and control valve, shocks, steering ball screw etc. I took a nap for a year. The other week my local shop was looking under the car and said ZXTUCY##!! "look at this". The contol arms were 2.75 inches DIFFERENT in length. This despite having written records of the car being "aligned" to factory specs three times in the last 2 years.
They adjusted the control arms to within 1/16" of each other
, Took a chalk line, and "trimmed" her out. The car steers perfect and now returns to streight when you let go of the wheel after a turn AND does not dart at all.
Yes, I have big egg on my face for not "seeing" it myself. But, it is a true story.- Top

Re: 72 power steering
Thanks,
I hadn't thought about the front suspension alignment. Most components, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends are pretty old and worn. I've recently purchased a complete front suspension rebuild kit from Ecklers. Maybe I'll wait till I finish the rebuild and re-alignment before tackling the control valve.- Top
