I am ready to install the tire tub on my 65 that I am doing a frame off resto on and the tire tub is original and generally in good condition. The edges are a little frayed and the back side of the tub is very faded. Like the black coloring is almost gone and is a whitish color. Any suggestions on what I should do with it to clean it up a bit and make it look more like when it was new. Thanks in advance Sheldon

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
After it is as clean as you can get it . let the tub dry a day or two then start coating it with WD 40 .until it stops soaking in .the fiberglass may be dried out from exhaust heat. this also works very good on the heater box- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
Hey it works good on parts that dont get painted or repaired.just put it on heavy let it soak a couple of days then wipe off the excess . you should try it on an old heater or a.c. box . it also works good on unpainted floor pans .- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
I hope y`all have to work on them if they have to be repaired or painted in the future. Any oil or silicone product will soak into the fiberglass and stay making it very difficult to do any repairs or to paint. I will not allow any of these products near my shop and shutter every time I see one of these cars come in with slick black tires. These things cause havoc in a paint shop. A better solution would to mix up some lacquer clear very thin and spray until you get the desired finish.- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
I wonder if a thin gel coat of resin w/a little black fiberglas pigment mixed with it and then applied to the surface of the tub would work better than any of the above methods?? I built a few canoes using a final skin of fiberglas cloth and then coated with polyester resin with desired color pigment added and it worked fine! Lots of luck and don't forget to wipe down the tub w/lacuer thinner or acetone first. Dick #31008- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
The tire tub is black but part of it has faded and is very whitish looking. I beleive it to be the original one but not 100% sure. You mentioned tan colour and grey. Were the 65s one of those colors? Thanks Sheldon- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
IN general the fiberglass on a 65 was white(tan) early and Gray later. I doubt that a 65 would have had a black glass tub unless maybe very late. I havent checked them all though, and have never done a survey as such. It could be that the General made them darker earlier than other parts because they could be seen from behind.- Top

Re: RESTORING 65 TIRE TUB
Wayne and others, Ive seen many, many cars with thier original tubs, and to date I have never seen a spare tire tub in any other color than dark grey.Of course, original body panels have come in many colors depending on the year.As far as the damaged sections go,try the clear route.Thats what Ive always done, and if it isnt satisfactory you can strip it back off with lacquer thinner, and try something else..........Bill S.- Top
