    C2 tachometer cable installation

Just tried to install a new tach cable (65 coupe with 327 and powerglide). Purchased a replacement from one of the corvette parts stores. I used the longer bolts to support the dash and slide it out. There appeared to be restraint from the speedometer cable and oil pressure line. I had barely enough room to attach the tach cable without disconnecting anything. The replacement cable was shorter than the old cable, but I figured there would be enough length for installation. I was wrong. Do all the replacement cables come in a shorter length? I thought about ordering one of the 90 degree adapters to see if that would solve the problem. I was going to remove the speedometer cable and clean out, but couldn't get it off at the transmission (I've got fairly large hands). Any advice related to the tach cable and suggestions for a simple method to disconnect the speedometer cable would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Steve - I have heard the replacements were the wrong length. Is the casing OK on your old unit? If so, go to a spedometer shop in town, and have them make you a new cable the correct length inside the casing. Use the GM spedometer cable lube to prevent needle bounce....Craig

Ditto Craig's advice, also the replacements have configuration differences from the originals making them immediately detectable for judging puropses, should you head in that direction...

I measured my (perfectly good) '67 tach cable flex shaft when I removed it (with the cluster out) to clean/lube it, just for reference in case I ever had to have a fresh one made to use in the original housing, and it was 25-3/4" long overall; a speedometer shop can make you one.

I checked my old shaft and it measures the same 25-3/4" length as well. It's just in two pieces. I'm going to take the shaft and casing to a speedometer shop here next week and have them make one up. I sent an email to the supplier that I bought the new cable from and suggested they might advise people in the future that the tachometer cable they are selling is too short and may not work. They have not had time to reply. Thanks for the advise.
