    C2 Whel Balance Weights

I recently completed mounting Coker 7.75X15 bias ply repro tires on my 66 steel wheels. We two plane balanced the tire assemblies and the weights used designated an American units weight in ounces but in several cases the weight also had both an ounce weight and metric equivalent grams stamped. Judging manual states that original weights are designated in ounce units and current weights often have metric designations. Several of my weights have both. All have at least the American ounce designation. Will the reference to grams on these weights cost a deduction? If so, I'll need to find a replacement weight or carefully remove the grams stamping on the current ones

any hint of metric designation will cost points. Oldtime gas stations usually have a 5 gal bucket of old english weights they'll usually part with for a six-pak.The lead weights with both english and metric will have , for example, the following: 1 or 1 oz on the left side of the weight and a 30 or 30gm on the right side. old fashioned english only weights will have , for example, a 4 to the left of the weights center and another 4 to the right of its center. therefore, simply removing the metric wieght designation on the right of center will fool some of the judges but not this ole fart. good luck, mike

      Wheel Balance Weights

      Dave,

I've written an article to be published in the Restorer on wheel balance weights. I don't know the expected publication date, but in the article I show a number of weights that I believe are 1960's and 1970's vintage and correct for Corvette. As Mike #14 says, grinding off the metric designation will not fool some judges now and it will fool fewer of them once the article appears. It wasn't my intention to make it harder to fool the judges, but rather to give everyone a good idea of what to look for in terms of correct weights when roaming the wrecking yards. Every so often there are 60's vintage weights on e-bay.

          Mike/Gary,

Thanks for the reply. I have access to older weights and I'll check these. I remember the older weights often had a B that designated I believe 1.5 oz and C for 2 or 2.5 oz. I assume that as long as the weight has an American weight in oz. only it will be acceptable?

          Regards,

            I wonder how many......

I melted down over the years for handloading handgun ammo. I must have melted down several hundred pounds worth, I probably could have marketed them on eBay to the guy that spend $700 on two window cranks for $50 per weight... Craig

The way this SHOULD work out is that

your spare is in PERFECT balance, no weights required. All of the others, weights only on the back of the wheel so that if the judge wants to deduct, at least he will pay the crick-in-neck penalty.
