    55 vette tranny problem

My 55 has a powerglide transmission. it has park, neutral, drive, first, and reverse. When I shift gears I cannot get into drive or if it is in drive, then transmission will not shift. It has worked very nicely since I acquired the car in 1995. RPM'S at 55 mph is about 4500 which is too high.
I installed a new carpet 2-3 months ago and I may not have re-installed the shift lever correctly. I have tried to reinstall shift lever again but still cannot get drive to work.I hope that this is a linkage problem and not gear problems in the tranny. All other gears work fine. Any answers, opinions, suggestions, etc. out there.

    Thanks

This sounds like the same problem that I had with my cast iron 'glide. I suspect that you have a worn or broken governor gear. 4 bolts hold the cover over it on the left hand side of the tranny. Take that cover off and you can then inspect the gear, after pulling the governor out. FASTCO has new NOS gears.

      Did you resolve this yet?

I may be in for some work to my '55 glide and I was just curious. BTW, do you have your car on the C1 Registry? Roy, Lars, me, and n/a are the only 55's on there. Even the 54's have 11, the other years 20+. The more the merrier.
