Probably a dumb question, but I'm confused how they are installed. These are the individual spark plug shields that are to protect the spark plugs from the manifold heat on big block cars. I recently purchased a 66 427/425 and it didn't have those shields on it. I bought them but am confused how how they are attached/installed. Thanks.

Re: Big Block Sparg plug shields
Ted - I also have a 66 427/425, and if I recall, the shield bolt to the small bosses on the 942 heads. In 67, this changed I believe to attaching to the exhaust manifold bolts, the shields are different. Do you have the correct 66 shields and 66 heads?...Craig- Top

Re: Big Block Sparg plug shields
65 and 66 big block's did have spark plug shields that attached to the head via a 1/4" hex head fastner .the 67 up big blocks didn't utilize plug heat shields, hence the 67 up heads didn't have a drilled and tapped plateau on their heads, so if you have 67 up heads there won't be provision to attach the plug shields.mike- Top

Re: Big Block Sparg plug shields
Mike------
Yes, after 1967 Corvette big blocks did not use the spark plug barrel shields. At least, they didn't until late 1972. Then, they got them again and the use continued through 1974. The new shields were of a different design, though, and they did not require special attachment provisions on the cylinder head. These shields had a tab which attached under one of the exhaust manifold bolts. They can be installed on any Corvette not originally equipped with shields if one desires shields. Their current part number is GM #465840 and they're available from GM to this very day.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

plug shields
The late 72-74 plug shields are also just as big a PITA as the 65-66 plug shields. I was reminded of this fact yesterday while changing plugs on the 73 Big Block.

Re: plug shields
An interesting sideline is how the ground wire clip installs on the barrel of the shield. Most times I see them cliped down the side on the flat edge, when it is obvious that they were designed to snap over the outer rolled edge. Try it sometime. It fits perfectly and snaps solidly into place.- Top

Correction
Well, I should have known better than to comment on the "67 shields" since there aren't any per Joe and Mike's posts! I knew there was the newer style, but didn't realize they didn' appear until the early 70's. Sorry for any confusion I caused....Craig- Top
