    C2 Engine Mounts

Are the current reproduction engine mounts built to the same configuration as the originals? I am helping a friend restore a 1965 396 c.i. convertible and we are debating on whether to reuse the existing original engine mounts or purchase a reproduction if they will not lose judging points for originality. The originals are in good condition and are showing no signs of separating.

Also, are the metal portion of the motor mounts dip painted before being vulcanized or after, or does the finish appear natural? After cleaning them and lighting bead blasting them it appears that thet were painted at some point.

    Re: C2 Engine Mounts

    James,

The replacement motor mounts have a safety mechanism made into the mount which is very bulky and sometimes will not allow the installation of shielding on the small blocks. I know we're talking BB here.

Some companies have the original motor mounts available. If you are building a trailer queen just use the originals. If you are going to drive your Corvette they should be changed to the replacements or new original type mounts.

Looking at the replacement mount and the new originals I believe the metal was painted prior to molding the rubber. There is no paint on the rubber but the steel portion in painted. Im's positive they did not take the time to mask these production mounts.

    Regards,

    JR

      James-----

There are actually quite a few sources for the 63-69 original-style, non-locking mounts. Some are close to original in configuration and some are not-so-close. There are none that I've ever seen that are exactly the same as the originals.

As JR mentioned, I would NEVER use one of these mounts on a driven car, either an old original OR a new reproduction. I would use ONLY the 70+ style LOCKING mounts.

        Re: C2 Engine Mounts loose/broken?

While we're on the subject, I think my '66 L36 A/C car (53k original miles) may be torquing in the mounts as evidenced by the PS pump getting very slightly knicked/dented by coming in contact with the left a-arm. The mounts appear original, have the factory AC "V" AC shims in place, and the bolts are tight. Sound like time to change-out the mounts?

Does Paragon offer decent close-to-correct replacements?

          Dan------

I'd say that new mounts are in order. Perhaps, long over-due.

I haven't seen a replacement for the original style mounts that I liked. Assuming that Paragon's mounts are the same as any of those that I've seen, then I'd say I wouldn't use them.

So, what to use if you want to stay with an original-style mount? I don't know.
