mid-year headlight on/off switch rebuild

Has anyone disassembled, cleaned and then reassembled the headlight switch for a mid-year? Mine is for a '63. I am in the middle of refurbishing the instrument cluster and noticed that headlight switch has some rust spots on the contacts that I can see. I would like to separate the plastic housing from the metal housing and see if there is more rust where the rod of the knob is located. I think that it would be a goo idea to remove all of the rust so I can have a more reliable circuit.

If you intend to drive the car, especially at night, I would seriously consider replacing the headlight switch. Over the years I have experienced a lot of problems with various headlight switches, including loosing the headlights with the car going 60mph+. Not much fun.

I suggest that you replace it with a new switch. I recently had a lot of problems getting all of the 1963 lights to come and/or stay on. Long Island Corvette Supply, Inc. has a reasonbly priced switch that took all of about 10 minutes to change and everything works great. As you may know, this switch is complicated and has a lot of contacts and springs. Not worth the risk of a failure at speed.
