    C2 Starter

Electrical system is fine and battery charges well (green indicator light glows). Starter turns over fine when cold but barely turns after engine reaches operating temperature (after a drive). Had the '65 for ten years with this same starter. Don't know how old it is. My question, is it time for a new starter????
    Thanks in advance.

    Bob,

Here are a few things to think about:

Are the battery cables and connections in good shape?

Is the battery in good shape? Check with a load at your friendly battery store.

Have you tuned up your 65 recently and reset the timing? Timing advanced too far can cause this problem.

Is your alternator putting out enough to charge the battery fully? Green light doesn't mean anything to an old battery.

Any of the above could be causing your problem. The last place I would look is the starter. Probably cause it's the most expensive. Try the cheap stuff first.

Had the same problem with my '67. I ended up replacing the solenoid spring (with a shorter one from GM) after searching the archives on this subject and have not had the problem since.

        John,

Could you please explain how the longer spring in your solenoid caused your starter to spin the motor over slowly when the engine was warm. I would like to remember this and maybe I can pass it along to some of my friends when they have this problem.

          JR,

I have the same starting problem once heated up. My timing is set at 36 degrees @3500 rpm with 15 degrees at idle. Should I drop it to 34 degrees @3200 or do you have a suggestion. Thanks for the help.

            Randy,

Your timing at idle should be set with the vacuum advance disconected and the line plugged.

My recommendation is that you back off a couple of degrees at a time and see if that helps your problem. You may have to compromise between timing and performance.

Make sure your vaccum advance is working properly before you adjust your timing.

            Hope this helps,

            Regards,

            JR

Look up starter heat soak in the archives. Had a discussion a couple of months ago. In short, you may require a solenoid heat shield-available from several vendors.

Is there any reason why the '65 on solenoid shield will not fit a C1?

                  JR,
I reduced the timing to 34 degrees @ 2800 rpm with an idle speed of 14 degrees. As soon as I did this it fired right up with no dragging. I didn't sacrifice any performance either it still runs strong. Thanks for the help.
