Timken Rear Wheel Bearings - Update

Here is an update on the Timken Rear Wheel Bearings for '63-'79 Corvettes. With these numbers that I got from Wayne, I called for prices at two local bearing houses.

    Part Numbers

    Inner Outer
    Bearing M86649 LM48548 Timken Bearing
    Race M86610 LM48510 Timken Race
    Seal 9178S 5113 National Seal

Prices First shop / Second Shop
    Inner Outer
    Bearing 10.44 / 13.96 8.52 / 11.48
    Race 5.02 / 6.71 4.06 / 5.42
    Seal 10.72 / 13.62 13.24 / 18.67

    .

These come to $52.00 for the first and $69.86 for the second per wheel. These prices make the prices from Ecklers and Mid America look downright cheap.

Ecklers is $44.99 kit for one wheel and states Timken bearings.

Mid America is $39.99 kit for one wheel. If you buy two, they are $34.99 each. They do not state bearing brand.

The Last Detail is $35.00 kit one wheel / $66.00 kit two wheels. They don't say the brand.

Volunteer Vette Products is $39.00 kit one wheel and states Timken.

This is not an endorsement of anyone's products, just general information.

do you get a discount at these places because bearing are a big mark up. when i was using bearing for different projects 50% discount from list to my business was normal. this was 10 years ago so things may have changed

Mike I have seen Timken banners posted across the front windows at my local Auto Zone. Have not checked out their prices.

          Mike;
Please post the price from Kaman bearing as I`m sure there are several of us
C-2 owners who have been "thinking" about purchasing a sapre set. Also, if you can obtain the Country of manufacture it would be appreciated. I would never consider using bearings manufactured in China, etc., no matter whose name is on the package.
          Thanks,

Most of the current Timken bearings are now manufactured in Argentina vs USA. However, they are still high quality. If you speak with folks at Kaman, you will quickly find there are practically no bearings left manufactured in the good ol USA.......Craig

              Thanks, Everyone

After getting further into this one, I'm finding more wrong than right. As such, I'm putting in a spare trailing arm and probably letting one of the shops rebuild this one because their price is going to be not that far off from me doing it by the time things are straightened out on missing parts, especially if I carry it in for a show special.

The bearings BTW were in great shape, but the outer was going dry while the inner was packed with excess grease (greasing tool). The problem was probably misdiagnosed pivot bushings at front. Then the wonderful shop beat the spindle senseless with a hammer trying to remove it, losing several pieces in the course of the disassembly.

The shop was supposed to be the one on OBT in Orlando north of the East West, for those in the Orlando area. So if you have a car in there, maybe a bit of monitoring would be prudent.
