I'm getting ready to do a frame off restoration on my '58 and I've been reading some of the posts on sequence. I did a frame on with my '60 so I have some experience but by no means a pro, so please bear with some of my "dumb" questions. It looks like the concensus is to do the body work first and then the chassis. I am planning on chemically stripping it (I had the '60 media stripped). I have begun stripping the chrome and interior out of it. Already I've found a few places "Bubba" has been at work (i.e. mis-matched front bumpers, "specialty" clips, etc). Also mine, like many of the unrestored C1s, has the slight buldge at the centers of the front fender lips due to the wear in the radiator support mount. Any advice from the pros via email or on the board is certainly appreciated. I have a few questions to start with:
- Is Captain Lee's the best stripper for the job?
- Should it be "completely" disassembled before stripping (i.e. doors off, deck lid off, etc)?
- Do you normally strip the engine compartment also (mine appears to only have the original blackout on it)?
- Should the body mounts be worked/replaced to get things sitting right before doing the body work?
- How do you work the underside of the body? Is it done while still on the chassis?
- Anyone have a good check list or book recomendation on restoration sequences and things to look out for?
