    64 Rear Axle Play

When I had my 64 on the lift recently I noticed that the left rear axle will move in and out of the differential about 1 inch. Maybe even a little more. The right rear only has about 1/2 inch play. Do I have a problem here or is this amount of play (movement in and out) normal?

It sounds as if both of them have worn out stub shafts.

You definately have worn out bearings and probably shaft spacers.

With that much end play, I would be inclinded to agree with Gene that the shafts may have gotten the shaft.

The car shouldn't be driven with that much play in the shafts until you find out what's going on Tom. Let's hope it's just the bearings.

If the entire assembly is moving with the half shafts still connected, I would also be wondering where the side yoke retainer clips in the differential were.

Don't mean to sound all gloom and doom on you Tom but .......

Hope it's straight forward and simple to remedy.

Re: 64 Rear Axle Play - Time to discover

how to remove a rear end. Check the archives, there are a couple of ways.

When you are on the road, the weight of the car keeps the axles in. The clips are NOT going to hold the axle in except in the axles' own weight. Sliding the car around a corner is not going to pull an axle out.

But it is time to look inside and find out why all is so loose.

The yokes had only a few thousands of an inch play when installed by the factory. Typical wear limit in the field is quoted by some to be as much as 1/8".

As to why your axles have 1/2" or 1" play might be due to excessive wear of the yoke ends, or could equally be because a previous owner decided to not reinstall the retaining circlips during a previous rebuild. Although I do not believe that this is a 'dangerous' situation, I'd want to find out the reason for the play at the first opportunity and repair as required. I cannot agree with one of the other posters who claims your car's condition is due to wear of bearings or spacers.

I was referring to only IF the entire driveline was still together from yokes to flanges and Tom could still get that kind of play, then the spindles MIGHT also be contributing factors Mike.

I agree that IF we're just talking about just the yokes, then the retaining clips are the prime suspects.

I believe the yoke retaining clips have fallen off, which is not uncommon. The in and out movement of the yoke will first take out the seal (I'm surprised you don't have a laek already) and finally the yoke will start hitting the housing. That will turn a fairly expensive job into a very expensive job. Sorry for the bad news, but I'd get it taken care of ASAP.

Not to debate the issue, but purely in the interest of not misleading the original poster- even if the entire driveline was intact and the spindles, bearings and spacers were ripped to shreds, this would not contribute to the amount that the "rear axle will move in and out of the differential" (to quote the original post).

Re: 64 Rear Axle Play Thanks!

Thanks Guys for the "educated" reply posts. Where can I get a good picture of the innards of my differential. I have a 66 Shop Manual. I'm especially curious about the location of the retaining clips. (I hope this will solve my problem). Would there be a Driveline archive covering all of this? Thanks again!
