Re: C2 427 valve cover drippers?

    Joe,

-----Dont know if this helps but we cut down a couple of sets of poly-locks for use with roller-rockers on a hot boat 350 motor and another 350 for a 65 Chevelle build-up I am in the middle of. My machinist did the work and we managed to get enough clearance for L82 aluminum factory valve-covers.
-----Oh,we did have to grind off the drippers!..............Bill S

      Internet in the '90s

At that time the Internet was in its infancy (1995) and I couldn't hop on a Discussion Board and see if it had been done.

What? VetteNet was running from before then. I was on in '94 and there were a lot of people with a lot of good info. alt.autos.corvette was flaky back then but was on.

Prior to that, you had Compuserve, Prodigy, and GEnie, among others. These services had lots of people in their groups from all over the country.

You just needed to vist the local library (i.e., Barnes & Noble) and borrow one of the many computer books on the Internet of the time. There was one, the Internet Yellow Pages or something like that, that listed literally thousands of email groups and newsgroups.

There were a few other Corvette lists back then, too, of which most died in a couple of years from being spread too thin and not having the word of mouth that others did.

The web-based forums like Corvette Forum really put a kink in the email and newsgroup forums.

Of course, that is all ancient history now, and no one is using a time machine back to '95 so this information is completely unnecessary.

        Re: Internet in the '90s

Yeah, and in 1993-96 I was in residency and had SO much time to investigate all of it. I got my first connection by phone line in 1998 to the best of my recollection.

Back then I did most of my investigating by phone and by personal contact at Carlisle.
Actually one of the best things I did to learn about Corvettes was to write a series of repair articles in Vette Magazine. I met people from around the country, and that combined with my NCRS contacts were my source of information.

I used Prodigy in the early 90s using a friend's name, so I knew that existed at the time, too.

          Youngsters!!!!

Sounds like there are blinders on thinking internet = personal computer! It all started as DARPA-net and we ran Teletype ASR 33 machines with punched paper tape to send messages in the 70's....

By the late 70's Compuserve had transformed from a traditional timesharing house (slice up a mainframe and rent computational time by the task) into a site with user group forums and the ability to compose and receive electronic mail.

We had portable 'data terminals' with acoustic couplers that could run 300 bps and there was a 'new fangled' modem out there called the Bell 212A that did the unheard of--1200 bps, full duplex, communication over a standard, dial-up phone line. Some were toying with NEW Apple IIC personal computers that provided FLOPPY DISK storage!

As if, having met me, you didn't know my age.

In the mid 70s I was in elementary school, the late 70s in middle school, and the early 80s in high school.

My wife's family had an Apple IIc so I finally understand what you're talking about.

                    Re: Youngsters!!!!

Not blinders, just acknowledging that the vast majority of Americans had no access until the wide spread use of personal computers in the '80s and services like Compuserve, Prodigy, GEnie, and so on.

When I was at IBM in the early '80s, we sent mail around the world - to any IBM computer.

Before that, things like the PDP11 I used didn't connect to anyone but the test set we were testing.

Further back, I used one of those teletype machines with an acoustic coupler to dial into different computers and "seek out and explorer strange new worlds" of anything we could find. Four character passwords made it easy, if they even had one. With what we did, and what could be done then, it is surprising that the world survived. You could see almost anything, change almost anything, and apparently no one seem to know about it, as long as you burned the reams of paper.

                      Re: patrick

Joe, I think there is considerable advantage to using the roler tip rockers like the magnums. After taking a few big blocks apart, I was disappointed in the considerable wear (elongation) of the valve guide holes. I thought the wear was excessive compared to other parts of the engine. I have also noticed such things as bent push rods and gaulded pivots. Engine rebuilders that I talked to felt that the valve guides did take a beating in big blocks. They seemed to like castiron valve guides for replacements vs brass type. But, I think the roler tip of the magnum rocker arm would greatly reduce lateral forces on the valve stem and would decrease the load on the valve train considerably. I think the horse power increases that they have shown with the simple roler tip is a good indication of the decrease in valve train load. Best regards, Terry

I have used the Harland Sharp roller rockers on my LS6 for 4 years now. You do need to use the 5/16 thick gaskets. In fact i found a pair of new raw steel valve covers from noah performance that had the drippers installed and hence the spot weld marks and ground the drippers off to clear the top of the covers For what it is worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                          Roller rocker/stock valve covers

Joe, I have an article where they built a '67 tri-power "resto" motor. In it they used the comp steel roller rockers with stock valve covers. They had to use the Fel-pro "double thick" valve cover gaskets to clear the rockers. The article is in "The Best of Hot Rod" "How to build monster Chevy big blocks". Hope this helps, Ted

                            Ted---

Thanks for the info. If the valve cover gaskets are all it takes, that will be no problem since I often use the Fel-Pro gaskets of that type. I was planning to use the Earl's elastomer gaskets on this engine, but if I have to switch to the Fel-Pro, that won't be a problem for me.
