    LT1 cam location?

    Dear Members,

I am tyring to locate an LT1 cam for my 67 small block. I contacted the Local Chevy dealer and they said it was discontinued in 2002. Should I try Summit or Paw? Are these Genuine Gm cams or one of those Muscle Car repros? Thank you much for the help!

      Justin-----

Your Chevrolet dealer is correct----the GM #3972178 LT-1 camshaft is discontinued. In fact, there are only 2 original cams for ANY 1955 to 1982 Corvette application still available in PRODUCTION-type form from GMSPO. These are the 65-68 L-79 cam, GM #3863151, and the 69-81 L-46/L-82 cam, GM #3896962. No other camshaft that was used in PRODUCTION for ANY OTHER 1955 to 1982 Corvette application remains available.

However, there are many ways to obtain a camshaft that is identical to the original GM #3972178. Reproductions of this camshaft are available from Federal Mogul, Crane, and Comp Cams. Also, a camshaft kit which includes reproduction camshaft and lifters manufactured by Crane is available from GM under GM #12364054.

There is nothing wrong with using a reproduction cam from one of the major cam manufacturers. No one will EVER know the difference and the engine will perform identically to the original GM piece.

Last week I saw an NOS GM #3863143, the 1965-71 SHP big block cam, sell on eBay for just over $900. To me, this is idiotic. Sure, I like GM parts myself, but my interest is as much for research purposes as for actual use. I also prefer to use original GM parts on the cars. However, to spend $900 for an NOS GM piece (without lifters) rather than spend about $100 for the GM camshaft + lifter kit as manufactured by Crane is just lunacy. Believe me, the original GM cam is NOT "$800 better".

        Re: LT1 cam location?

Thank you much Joe and Clem for the help woth the part #'s for the cams. All three of the manufacturers mentioned are fine by me. I just don't know who makes the Muscle Car cams and didn't want some wonky piece in my well-balanced, high-reving 327. Thanks Again!
