    C3 Muncie Rebuild

Greetings. I'm considering rebuilding my transmission. Problems I'm experiencing are a shifter jamming going from 2nd to 3rd and a grinding going into 4th. On occasion, the shifter will pop out of 4th. I bought the car like this and knew I had to address these problems. (I had similar problems with a Muncie in a 1973 vega I owned in the late 70's. I think some of the problem is with shifter adjustment, but I suspect 4th gear and synchros may need to be replaced at this time. Correct? I'm open to the voices of experience. Thank you. Tony.

    Tony,

I'm hardly the voice of experience on this one, but right now I've got my M20 in pieces on my work bench.

I purchased the rebuild video, rebuild kit and special wrench from Medatronics (www.5speeds.com) and while this may be a job to do slowly and methodically it is not whatsoever difficult. I hope to reassemble mine tomorrow. My own thought is that if you've ever rebuilt an engine you can do this too. Also use your service manual too, not that there is that much additional information, but you can never have too many resources.

Tony, I did mine about a year ago using Larry Low's instructions. As Patrick says, it was not difficult. It's a little intimidating when you get to that point in disassembly where everything just sort of falls apart, but it WILL all go back together! Just take your time and refer often to the pictures and instructions.

Larry sells his "manuals" on Ebay. Just do a search for Muncie rebuild and look for Larry Low in the description. He also tells you how to make your own tool for removing the gland nut, and lists several vendors as resources for parts and info.

      Good luck!
      Jeff
