    C2 Valve Cover Decal

Can anyone suggest a method to remove the center decal on a C2 valve cover without scratching the under paint? I applied a water based decal but put it on upside down. Need to remove it and apply a new one right side up. Could I soak the edges and start to peel it at the edges?

Spray gasket remover at the auto parts store.

The gasket removers are usually very similar in chemical composition to paint remover (methylene chloride, caustic). They'll take the decal off but they'll take the paint, too.

I'd immerse the valve cover upside down in a pan of water so that the decal area is completely submerged. Let it stay this way for several hours. I think that the decal will float right off, especially since it was recently applied (an old one might not be so easy to get off this way). If this doesn't work, then I don't expect that there's going to be any way to remove it without damaging the underlying paint.

Dave: You might want to try WD40 to remove the decal. WD40 works very well removing most adhesives and might work on your decal. Try spraying the edges and let it soak for a few minutes and see if the edges loosen. No guarantee but it might do the job without damaging the paint.

Try one of the orange based "GOO BE GONE" type liquids on the market. I have one of these products in a bottle and it works well on any surface without damaging paint. If you have an extra decal, apply it to a painted surface and experiment removing it before you use it on your valve cover.

Funny that you mentioned goo be gone -- my wife also suggested it. I'll try it in a corner of the cover or on another surface. I'll probably try Joe Lucia's suggestion first-- i.e. soaking in water.

            Thanks to all,

Dave, how is the 66 resto coming? Will you be driving it this summer?
